I sent a few dwarves to screen the wagons, who didn't all even get any exp during that stage. The loyalists pulled the elves off me mostly, so I could focus my forces on the northern reinforcements. On one turn I baited an archer to attack from flat, so that I could kill it and take the hills close to the north keep, from that point on it was manage-able.
