Thank you! I'm almost done mining you for wisdom, apologies that this got so much longer than either of us might have expected.
As for XP, it's true that Elvish Shaman requires much more careful management than Mage. It's often frustrating to calculate enemy HP just to give the last hit to Elvish Shaman. However, I see it as an investment with the mindset of "Mage is easier to use for now, but Elvish Shaman can flourish in the future."
So, on higher difficulties, I've often struggled with "babysitting" units mainly because of shortages of gold. Trying to feed shamans experience usually involves very careful management of enemy health which means I'm very inefficiently fighting, and on Challenging or higher difficulties I often end up needing to use Shamans as front-line units where they get killed. Is a high casualty rate of shamans something you also experience, or is it that careful management of gold leads to better use of units?
After capturing far villages, Silver Mage can come back to join the battle through the villages near the main army.
Oddly I've actually rarely used Silver Mages as village grabbers. This is probably mainly just because their relatively low movement speed makes them very slow at this, compared to say just sending a Scout across the map. And of course, that Scout is often already there, since the village needs to be flagged to begin with. Can you point to one of your replays where you use a Silver Mage this way?
Reason 2: It's not necessary to have 2 healers in some scenarios. 2nd loyal healer can become redundant.
You'd mentioned previously that you don't really value healers perhaps as much as the norm, how do you sustain that? I often use healers just behind the front-lines so that units can stay in combat, whereas relying on villages means sending them out of combat, sometimes more than a turn away. Ultimately I end up with even fewer units fighting because they're all busy being healed somewhere else, I noticed this was particularly problematic on S17 due to the slow movement of both dwarves and healers.
