I think the fastness versus durabilty is a trade-off. I would not necessarily make the base version stronger, but how about stronger level 2 or 3 types? I'd actually even add another type (level) if that is possible design-wise; or perhaps allow one to choose towards two different paths, where one variant is the stronger one but not as fast.
I do not disagree that it is a weak unit, but it is a trade-off in regards to speed. I'd bring it a bit more variety lateron when units have more XP.
