There are 3 ways to keep a Gryphon alive:So, I found a post that said if you don't kill the Mother (and the Loyalists do) then you can get Loyal Level 2 Gryphons. But only if at least one survives.
How do you keep them alive? They're very fast, they don't mind flying into a group of units that collectively kills them, and they don't care which side they attack.
A bit stumped.
1. Luck
As Lord-Knightmare pointed out, even if a Gryphon flies around, it may somehow survive.
2. Trap
Place 2 units on opposite sides of a Gryphon, and it can’t fly away. Cycle damaged trapping units if necessary.
3. Avoid
A Sleeping Gryphon wakes up only if it attacks a unit or if it is attacked by a unit. Therefore, by never entering any adjacent hexes, it never wakes up or flies away. It stays at 0 movement point forever.
3 is the safest if you manage to prevent loyalists from attacking a Sleeping Gryphon. If loyalists are bound to attack the Sleeping Gryphon you are trying to protect, then compromise and go for 2. The last resort is 1, which often doesn't work.
The official wiki has the flowchart for Gryphon events.
